Hazardous Waste Generator Improvement Rule Put into Effect in Montana
The Hazardous Waste Generator Improvement Rule, published in 2016, includes more than 60 changes to how hazardous waste is handled. Specifically, it addresses gaps in existing regulations to strengthen environmental protection, while also providing greater flexibility for generators to manage waste in a cost-effective manner.

Anticipated Rulemaking by July 1, 2022
- Washington D.C.: The rule is in the post public comment period (Adopting by Reference). The rule is to go into effect early Summer 2022.
- Montana: The rulemaking is complete and was put into effect May 14, 2022.
Anticipated Rulemaking after July 1, 2022
- Minnesota: The rule is currently being drafted and will be added to the previously proposed rulemaking: Land-Related Housekeeping Amendments. The proposed publish date, along with the public hearing dates, comment periods and meeting notices is October 2022. The rule is to go into effect in 2023.
- New Hampshire: The rulemaking for Part 2 is undergoing internal discussions. The proposed publish date for Part 2, the public hearing dates, comment periods, and meeting notices will occur in 2023 or 2024. Part 2 is to go into effect in 2023 or 2024.
