Clean Earth’s Avalon, TX Facility Acquires New Shredding System
Clean Earth’s Avalon, TX facility recently installed a second shredding system, doubling its capacity. This improved shredding system is designed to process loose-packed organic liquids, such as paints, solvents, hand sanitizers, pesticides, and herbicides.
The new shredder is designed to process 160 55-gallon drums per shift, a 3,300-gallon increase per shift compared to the current system. The drums encompass several small containers that undergo our sorting process before shredding. The sorting process lets us see if the inside contents are shred-compatible. After the contents have been verified, our approved material is separated and shredded in an low-oxygen chamber that uses nitrogen to displace oxygen, reducing the potential for fire. Often, the containers themselves can also be shredded, whether a plastic bucket, metal can, or something similar. Once the process is complete, any residual containers are disposed of, and the contained material becomes ready for use as fuel.
Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Clean Earth has answered the call to recycle expired, off-spec, non-viable hand sanitizer, meeting the growing market. This improved shredding system allows Clean Earth to increase the capacity for hand sanitizer, paint collected at Household Hazardous Waste events, retail waste, and other loose-packed products. In addition, the new system has led to higher automation levels, the minimization of labor and handling, and the internalization of waste that was historically shipped to third parties.
