Congress Keeps Environmental Protection Agency Funding at 2017 Levels Through January 2018

On December 19, 2017, Congress adopted a continuing resolution that will continue the (EPA) Environmental Protection Agency funding at existing 2017 levels through January 19, 2018.

Passing this continuing resolution allows Congress more time to adopt an Omnibus Appropriations bill funding the entire government. While this means that final 2018 funding for the EPA has not yet been finalized, the budget cutbacks are expected to be much less than President Trump’s original proposed 30 percent reduction.

Prior to this move by Congress to adopt this continuing resolution, the Senate and Congress had previously adopted bills reducing the EPA’s budget in 2018.

On November 20, 2017, the Senate adopted a bill to reduce the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s budget in 2018 by $149.5 million. This would decrease the EPA’s yearly budget to $7.9 billion in annual funding.

This follows a bill adopted by Congress that would cut funding for the EPA by more than $500 million, reducing its 2018 budget to nearly $7.5 billion.
